Vacuum Pump Selection Guide

Choosing the right vacuum pump is essential for reliable hold-down. The best solution depends on your table series, table size, material, leakage level and whether coolant is used.

As a general rule, smaller wood and plastics setups often work well with dry running vane pumps, while leakage-heavy applications can require side channel blowers. For metal working, Venturi adapters and liquid ring pumps are commonly the correct route depending on the process. For paper, film and foils, smaller tables can suit Venturi adapters in best-case conditions, while larger tables, semi-porous materials or higher leakage can push the recommendation toward dry running pumps or side channel blowers.

Important: The recommendations below are based on best-case / ideal-use scenarios. Final pump suitability will still depend on your workpiece, material porosity, gasketing, leakage, spoilboard condition, vacuum zones, machining method and general working conditions.
Metal Working

Venturi Adapters or Liquid Ring Pumps

For metal working, a Venturi compressed-air generator or a liquid ring pump is usually the right starting point. Venturi is a practical low-cost option where compressed air is available. Where coolant is used, liquid ring pumps are the stronger choice.

  • Venturi adapters suit selected R, RAL and RAL Pro setups
  • Liquid ring pumps are ideal where coolant is used
  • Higher-flow Venturi options are needed on larger tables

Dry Running Pumps or Side Channel Blowers

For smaller wood and plastics tables, compact dry running vane pumps such as SC 8, DST 8 and DST 16 are often a good fit depending on leakage and airflow requirement. Where workpieces are porous or leakage is substantial, a side channel blower becomes the stronger option because airflow matters more than deep vacuum.

  • SC 8 is a good compact option for lower-leakage setups
  • DST pumps remain a strong general starting point for smaller tables
  • Side channel blowers suit large-area leakage-heavy setups
Paper, Film & Foils

Venturi, Dry Running Pumps or Side Channel Blowers

Smaller paper and foil tables can suit Venturi adapters in best-case conditions. As table size, material porosity or leakage increases, the stronger route can become a dry running pump such as SC or DST. If the material is very porous or leakage is high, a side channel blower may be more suitable.

  • Venturi can suit smaller FAL or MP setups
  • SC 8 or DST 8 can suit compact controlled-leakage setups
  • Side channel blowers suit very porous or high-leakage conditions
